How to break in PowerStop discs and pads after installation
Bedding involves controlled heating and cooling of the brakes after installation. The goal is to evenly transfer a thin layer of friction material from the pad to the disc. This improves braking efficiency and reduces the risk of runout, vibration and noise.

- Choose a safe, empty stretch of road, with no traffic and no need to stop abruptly.
- After a series of braking actions, do not hold the car stationary with the brake pressed hard. A hot pad can leave a mark on the disc.
- Do not cool the brakes with water. PowerStop indicates that this may damage components.
- If the brake pedal is soft, the car pulls or the system was not bled properly, stop driving and check the installation.
Drilled, slotted and uncoated discs
This procedure fits typical PowerStop kits with drilled & slotted discs and for uncoated discs.
- Brake 5 times from approximately 65 km/h to approximately 15 km/h, moderately hard or hard, one after the other.
- Do not bring the car to a standstill between brake applications and do not allow the brakes to cool during this set.
- Then perform 5 moderate braking actions from approximately 55 km/h to approximately 8 km/h, also in a short sequence.
- Once you have finished, drive for approximately 5 minutes at a steady, moderate speed, without excessive heat on the brakes and without stopping completely if you can avoid it.
- Once the brakes have returned to normal operating temperature, you can ride normally.
PowerStop Evolution Coated discs
For discs Evolution Coated PowerStop gives a calmer procedure with more repetitions.
- After installation, perform 30 decelerations from approximately 48 km/h to approximately 8 km/h.
- Leave approximately 30 seconds for cooling between each braking action.
- If you have to stop the car, leave room in front and let the vehicle roll slightly or put the transmission in neutral/park, depending on the situation and the type of car.
- After completing the procedure, allow the brakes to cool to normal operating temperature.
PowerStop Track Day pads
Track Day pads require a different break-in than the street series. This procedure is for cars prepared for track driving.
- Accelerate the car to about 96 km/h and brake moderately hard to about 16 km/h. Repeat 10 times.
- Drive around 48 km/h without using the brakes for a few minutes to cool them down.
- Repeat the series of 10 braking actions, this time from approximately 129 km/h to approximately 16 km/h.
- Cool again for a few minutes at approximately 48 km/h without touching the brake.
The most common errors after installation
- Bringing the car to a complete stop and holding the brake pedal just after the discs have warmed up significantly.
- Driving too gentle during the first kilometers, without proper transfer of the friction material.
- Cooling with water or a washer immediately after warming up the brakes.
- Grease on the friction surface of the pad or rotor, dirty guides, or worn caliper hardware.
